Wainwright Prize
Since this may well be an ephemeral listing (the short-list is out soon) I’m getting the notice up right away that Silt Road has been long-listed for the Wainwright Prize. I was very chuffed to discover this by Tweet when I was in London yesterday, when in fact I was sneaking in a coffee and cake at the London Review of Cakes in Bury Place, where they also sell books.
Silt Road is up alongside some serious writers and books: Robert Macfarlane’s The Old Ways, Philip Hoare’s The Sea Inside to name just two. The Wainwright Prize is for the book which ‘best reflects The Wainwright Society’s core values of inspiring people to explore the outdoors, whilst engendering a love of landscape and respect for nature.’
Well, no matter the result, it is great to see a prize that supports and celebrates writing that does those things.
Chair of the judges is Dame Fiona Reynolds.
The full long-list is:
Badgerlands – Patrick Barkham
Deer Island – Neil Ansell
Field Notes from a Hidden City – Esther Woolfson
Holloway – Robert Macfarlane and Dan Richards
Pondlife – Al Alvarez
Ramble On – Sinclair McKay
Silt Road – Charles Rangeley-Wilson
The Green Road into the Trees – Hugh Thomson
The Old Ways – Robert Macfarlane
The Sea Inside – Philip Hoare
Under Another Sky – Charlotte Higgins
Walking Home – Simon Armitage
